Krang Shuri Waterfalls, this is one that is just surreal! There is not other word to describe it. An strangely this is not on the itinerary of most tourists; another plus point.
We were doing a 5 day family trip to the north east state in India; Meghalaya. When we came upon Krang Shuri Waterfalls when searching on interesting places to visit, we just knew we HAD to visit it. And we did not regret doing so; it was all and much more than what we had read of its beauty.
We had finished our visit to Dawki and then headed off to Krang Shuri Waterfalls. As we started to leave Dawki, we noticed trucks laden with rocks parked on one side of the highway. We got to know that these were trucks waiting to clear formalities and go into Bangladesh to deliver the rocks. This was seemingly a big trade element. Sadly we had seen several hills being quarried and the rocks being taken away on trucks. Now we knew where they were headed. It was sure to leave a scar on the otherwise beautiful landscape. Our drive on the route had us seeing the rock laden trucks parked on the highway side for close to 25 kms!
To reach the waterfalls, one has to take a diversion from the highway and drive a few kilometers. Once we had parked, it was time to walk downwards on the path leading to the waterfall.
Our muscles were still aching from the hike we had undertaken to the Umshiang Double Decker Living Root Bridge. But thankfully this was an easy angled slope with limited steps š . We trudged on. Tickets paid for and we finally reached the top of the waterfall.
The view from above was very un-announcing of the beauty that awaited us from below. We had decided that we would be swimming in the natural pool that was formed by the waterfall. So we hired the mandatory life jackets and then headed down the steps towards the base. Here is the first view of it:
Now for a family picture of course š
Well, it was time to “take the plunge”, so to say š . Here are some pictures of the family in the pool:
They then decided that they wanted to get up close and personal with Krang Shuri Waterfall š . So off they swam to right under and then behind the waterfall.
Here is a picture facing the waterfalls:
You can also see a rainbow at the bottom of the waterfall:
Back up at the car park, all the swimming and climbing left us famished. We noticed huts nearby. So we headed over to to check for a meal. We were rewarded with some yummy food; the cool breeze and open views came free with the meal š .
Video
Here is a short video that I put together of our visit to the waterfalls. Make sure you watch in HD quality to get an appreciation of its beauty.
Recommendation
This is one attraction that should not be missed when making a visit to Meghalaya. However, you will need to budget time for it additionally as it is out of the usual route that is taken by tour operators or most tourists. But trust me, it is worth it

Waterfalls are magical! Great photos.
